Makatizen Card

Makatizen Card: All-in-One Card for Makati citizens

YESTERDAY · PUBLIC

The city government of Makati City, in collaboration with Globe Telecom, its subsidiary G-XChange Inc., and iBayad Online Ventures Inc., today launched the Makatizen Card which will be made available to Makati’s residents and employees.

The Makatizen Card will allow the city’s 500,000 residents to access city government services and transact with the city government. They can receive cash allowances, stipends, and other cash benefits using their Makatizen Card. They can also use their cards to pay fees and taxes, as well as for personal remittances and other financial transactions.

Some 1,000 functioning sample cards were launched and tested at Makati City Hall this morning.
City government employees, on the other hand, can use their Makatizen Card to receive salaries and allowances.

The Makatizen Card also functions as an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) Card and is a valid government ID card.
Makati Mayor Abigail Binay said the Makatizen Card collaboration with Globe and its subsidiaries “takes us a step nearer to achieving our goal of empowering everyone, including those in the marginalized sectors of society, to enjoy a better quality of life.”

Mayor Abby noted that the Makatizen Card goes beyond providing Makati citizens with instant access to essential services of the city government, which in itself is a major leap forward for the city.
“The wide range of digital and mobile services offers the people of Makati more convenient and cost-effective ways of meeting their day-to-day needs and obligations,” she said.

The mayor said the city government will extend its full support for Globe Telecom’s initiatives “geared towards strengthening its telecommunications network to promote a digitally-connected Philippines.”

“With confidence and optimism, we view this unsolicited project proposal from Globe and its subsidiaries as the springboard for the rapid transformation of Makati into the country’s first digital city, where citizens and civil servants are able to experience the optimum benefits of the latest innovations in information technology,” she added.
“For the Philippines to truly become a digital nation, we need to fully take advantage of new digital opportunities and innovations to enable growth in every corner of our country.  We laud the vision of the Makati City government whose support of this initiative is critical to build the city-wide digital ecosystem, a step towards the realization of our dream for the Philippines to become an admired nation,” said Ernest Cu, Globe President and CEO.

Globe has been ramping up network investments in a bid to amplify benefits of its new spectrum assets and enhance mobile services particularly for data. The company has announced a capital spend of $750 million for the year in an effort to continuously improve mobile and data services.
Globe Business, the enterprise information and communications technology (ICT) arm of Globe, is leading the way in encouraging local government units like Makati City to adopt the integration of ICT and governance as a means of improving the delivery of government services and exchange of information.

The said initiative supports Globe's drive to transform the Philippines into a digital nation by instilling the importance of eGovernance to offices ranging from the local government units up to the national government.

One of the capabilities derived from an improved mobile and broadband infrastructure is the creation of a city-wide cashless ecosystem wherein e-payment methods such as e-money and debit/credit cards are utilized instead of physical cash.  This will benefit not only the residents but also schools, hospitals, government offices, transportation facilities, and other micro, small, and medium-size enterprises.

GXI will serve as the financial service provider for the Makatizen Card while iBayad will deploy the mPOS terminals and build the merchant network where the cards will be accepted.

The Makatizen Card is a valid government-issued ID that comes with a Near-Field Communication (NFC) feature that allows city offices equipped with iBayad machine readers to verify the identity of residents and Makati City employees in a single tap. It stores the information which easily identifies the card holder availing of various city government services without the need to present additional documents.

“Each Makatizen Card carries the features of the GCash mobile wallet but is also customized to be used in the city-wide local merchant network.  All services that they will get in Makati City, whether it is payment of taxes, cash allowances for health and other benefits, etc. will be directly credited to this GCash wallet that is linked to  the card.  They don’t have to carry anything except this ID,” said Albert Tinio, President of GXI which operates GCash mobile money service.
On the other hand, iBayad Founder and CEO Paolo G. Saycon said: "For us, the Makatizen Card Project is as much a social endeavour, as it is a business venture. This undertaking is aligned with iBayad’s purpose of developing socially relevant and meaningful financial innovations that will transform the way people pay. Our objective is to accelerate the adoption and transformation of every consumer’s traditional spending behaviour from cash-centric to electronic payments.”

Makatizen Card holders can take advantage of the different financial services of GCash and the merchant network support of iBayad  to pay government institutions, hospitals, merchants and even transact with Jollijeeps, sari-sari stores, and ambulant vendors for easier and safer transactions.

As an additional benefit for Makati City residents and employees, iBayad will be implementing the “Makatizen Loyalty and Rewards Program” to promote continued use of the card and for them earn loyalty reward points that can used to purchase items. The card will also be used for direct and real-time crediting of salaries and benefits to the GCash wallets of employees, health beneficiaries, senior citizens, and students to improve operational efficiency and tracking of cash flow.

Breathtaking Siargao

Breathtaking Siargao: Awesome things to see.

MANILA, Philippines – Siargao, an island 45 minutes from Cebu by plane, is one of the easternmost islands of the Philippines. It used to be relatively unknown in the tourism scene and became more popular when it was featured by famous surfing photographer John Callahan in the 1990s. Since then, tourism in the island has boomed because of clear waters, tidal pools, and its surfing scene. (READ: 7 breathtaking Mindanao destinations you shouldn't miss)
Tourists can take their pick among the island’s attractions. For starters, there is Mapupungko Pool. Mapupungko is a tidal pool that is shielded from the Pacific Ocean by a reef barrier. The pool itself is calm and clear, and perfect for those who want a more mellow experience in the water. It is one of the most visited natural attractions in the island. The water is so inviting that you’d want to take a dip once you see it.

There are also other islands scattered around the main island of Siargao. one of them, Naked Island, is exactly as the name suggests: mostly bare, just white sand and blue sea all around. In contrast to Naked Island, Guyam Island offers a lush clump of vegetation for tourists. It is secluded and uninhabited (except by the island’s caretakers), with a sandy beach on one side and a rocky beach on the other.
Most island hopping tours start in Naked Island and end in Guyam Island, where tourists can stay and watch the sunset. Tourists can stay the night in one of the islands; the fishing communities in Daku Island offer huts for anyone who wants to spend the night. Boats can be rented from the port of General Luna.

Siargao has its share of coral reefs and dive spots like many other beaches in the Philippines. There are many dive shops that offer gear rentals and diving crash courses for brave and adventurous tourists.

To the west of Siargao is the town of Socorro. It is best known for Bucas Grande, also known as Sohoton Cove National Park. It is accessible via ferry from the Dapa port in Siargao and costs about 100 pesos. From Socorro, there are boats that can be hired to Bucas Grande.
Bucas Grande is composed of a network of limestone islands, some of which are still unexplored. The scene is framed by virgin mangrove forests and clear blue waters with white sand beaches.
Some islands house limestone caves where tourists can visit the resident cluster of bats. Sohoton Cove is also famous for its lagoon filled with stingless jellyfish that swim around the water like a living lava lamp. Sohoton Cove is declared as a protected area of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.

As one of the foremost tourist spots in the country, Siargao does not fall short of quality accommodations for tourists. Siargao Bleu Resort and Spa offers guests a relaxing experience to complete their stay on the island. The resort offers spa amenities and chic suites in modern architecture around a central pool. It also has a gym, bar and restaurant to complete the resort experience.

What sets Siargao apart from other beach islands in the Philippines is its distinction as the surfing mecca of the south. It is a literal surfer’s paradise, with seven-foot waves available for most of the year (from September to May) in the clear blue waters of the Pacific. (READ: 14 stunning photos of Siargao, a surfer's paradise)
It’s odd to see people flocking to the beach in October, but that’s exactly what happens in Siargao every last quarter of the year. September/October marks the start of surfing season in Siargao, and surfers from all parts of the country head to its shores. The reason for their pilgrimage: the famed Cloud 9 surf beach. (READ: Get Stoked: 7 lesser-known PH surf spots)
It is also at the start of the surfing season that the Siargao International Surfing Cupcommences.

If (and it’s a really big if) tourists ever get tired of frolicking in the waters, in that rarest chance that someone feels that he’s had enough of the beach, an inland adventure is always an option.
Tourists can rent motorcycles to explore the villages to see what happens behind the scenes in the island. The lush rice fields dominate the villages, and provide a welcome contrast to the never ending coastline. Locals are always friendly and eager to talk, and might just lead curious people to off the beaten track destinations like the newly opened Tayangban Cave Pool in the town of Pilar, great for a midday dip.

If you’re looking for a place to eat, great choices from seafood to local and foreign cuisines are available. One must try Aventino’s Tricia – thin crust pizza with cheese, meat and veggies. Pair it with a cold drink and you’ll have a satisfying meal after exhausting island activities.

A SNAKE GIVE BIRTH

HOW DOES A SNAKE GIVE                          BIRTH?

One of the fiercest animals in the reptilian kingdom and feared by many humans and other species alike, snakes are known to be the most cunning creatures that roam the planet. Many regard this snake as fearsome and a powerful predator in the wild. Many films have produced in the namesake of these wild animals such as Anaconda: The Hunt for the Blood Orchid, Snakes on a Plane, and many more. Some exotic pet enthusiasts even take these kinds of reptiles as pets especially pythons and boa constrictors.

But many are wondering how it looks like when a snake is giving birth to its youngsters. People would think that since snakes are reptiles, they are egg-bearing creatures and burrow their young underneath the earth just like the other members of the reptile family. But little they know that not majority of these cold-blooded creature lay eggs but can also give birth into a live young. A video footage was captured and uploaded by a YouTube user named Arvind Tripathi. It showed how a a certain specie of snakes gives a live birth to youngsters.

The snake mother was seen looking tormented and pained while on the sandy ground. Villagers who witnessed the unusual scene were amazed seeing the snake give birth into little snakes that crawl all together in the ground. The little ones crawled out of the birth canal, squirming and shaking their way out into the new world outside their mother’s womb.

Little do we know that some snakes carry the eggs while still inside the womb and hatches thereafter, resulting into a live young. Most species of snakes, around 70% lays their eggs and leaves it outside for it to hatch. While the remaining 30% are giving birth into a live young. Species like rattlesnakes, vipers, boas, and sea snakes are few to name.

Alice Dixson

Alice Dixson Finally Opens up         about Robinson’s “Taong-Ahas”

Admit it, you were scared to go inside a Robinson’s Galleria fitting room or restroom from the mid-’80s up until the mid-’90s just like anyone else. Anyone who was alive back then heard stories about Robina Gokongwei’s twin, a half-human, half-snake creature that had a penchant for beautiful women whom he later abducted after marking them. One of the alleged victims was popular movie and TV actress Alice Dixson. Ms. Dixson was one of the “it” girls back then. People fell in love with her the moment she rolled her shoulder and uttered the words, “I can feel it,” for a Palmolive soap commercial.

She also became the darling of Philippine prime time TV when she starred as Faye in Okay ka, Fairy Ko, a popular TV show which premiered in 1987 on IBC 13, and which starred “Bossing” Vic Sotto.
In an episode of Sarap Diva, a cooking and talk show hosted by Asia’s Songbird Regine Velasquez, Ms. Dixson talked about the urban legend and what supposedly happened to her at Robinson’s Galleria. She was clearly aware of the urban legend and she said what people are claiming wasn’t true. She was never abducted by a “taong ahas.” The myth of the half-human, half-snake creature is nothing new.

In Part II of Historia natural del sitio, fertilidad y calidad de las Islas e Indios de Bisayas (History of the Bisayan Islands [1668]) by Fray Ignacio Francisco Alcina, the Spanish priest documents the supernatural beliefs of the Visayans and one of them is the belief in the existence of humans having snake twins. Snakes have been part of various myths and legends. It even played an integral part in the salvation history of man. In the Bible, the snake symbolizes temptation, the beginning of man’s downfall, the start of man’s pride swelling, catapulting him, at least in his mind, to a god-like status. The snake is the devil’s advocate, taunting man to defy God.

The Chinese believe that snakes are evil, malevolent creatures that cause harm. They are believed to possess magical powers like shape-shifting. One such creature famous for her shape-shifting abilities is Madam White Snake from the Legend of White Snake. Other creatures that are part snake are Fuxi and Nüwa and Gong Gong. In the Philippines, we have Zuma, a comic book character created by Jim Fernandez in 1976. Zuma is an Aztec demigod with the body of a human and a two-headed snake around its neck.

He is the son of Kukulkan, the Aztec serpent god. His daughter is named Galema. Galema was conceived when Zuma raped Galela, a mortal. No one really knows how the urban legend of the Robinson’s Galleria “taong ahas” started. It could have been just someone’s idea of a joke. Someone had told someone and it eventually spread like wildfire. Or it could have been a publicity stunt. They say there is no such thing as bad publicity. Good or bad PR is still PR. Or it could’ve been started by the rivals of the Gokongweis. At that time, and even up to now, there are very few players when it comes to mall industry. Perhaps someone didn’t want to play fair and wanted to ruin Robinson’s Galleria’s reputation. Maybe someone had concocted a wild story they knew urban legend-believing Filipinos would eat up.

Even when logic dictates that such stories could not possibly be true, as there really are no half-human half-snake creatures out there, you still get goosebumps when you enter a Robinson’s Galleria restroom or fitting room. Especially when it’s nighttime, and you look around and you find yourself all alone.
You can watch the entire video here.

Woolly Mammoth!

These Farmers Thought That They Hit Something Underground           Until They Found Out That This Was A Woolly Mammoth!

The collection, looking like it comes straight from a horror film, also featured the sketches of infamous serial killer Jack the Ripper’s victims: Catherine Eddowes and Elizabeth Stride.

Supposed human hearts and other organs can be found preserved in jars.
A blog post about the alleged find claimed: “In 1960 in London at the time of clearing the site for construction of a new residential neighborhood, the old long-abandoned mansion belonged to Thomas Theodore Merrylin was set for demolition.

Two farmers were trying to drain water on their field when they hit something underground.
They dug the ground and discovered that lying beneath was a woolly mammoth.
20% of the mammoth’s body was found.

Woolly mammoths are extinct relatives of today’s elephants. Although the word “mammoth” has come to mean “huge,” woolly mammoths were probably about the size of African elephants. They lived during the last ice age, and they may have died off when the weather became warmer and their food supply changed. Humans may also be partly responsible for their disappearance due to hunting.

Two farmers from Michigan were trying to drain water on the field where they were working. Suddenly they hit something underground. Then the two farmers, James Bristle and Trent Satterthwaite were shocked with what they discovered.

They started digging and dug 8 feet deeper to finally see what was under the ground they have always worked on. They finally able to see that it was a remains of a woolly mammoth! There was a total of 20% remains that they found. It included its head, tusks, several rib parts, set of vertebrae, etc. It had been said that the one they found lived more than ten thousand years ago.

Dan Fisher, a University of Michigan professor said the missing parts of the woolly mammoth might have been consumed by humans. Also, the one they dug was in its 40s or 50s already when it died. About 30 woolly mammoths were found in Michigan.

According to the professor, the one found may also not be a woolly but a “Jeffersonian mammoth” or a hybrid of woolly and Columbian mammoth.

“You have a better chance of winning the lotto than doing what we just did,” the professor said.

Only a few people get lucky with certain discoveries about historical remains and it is truly a shocking yet amazing experience to find one.

This Mysterious Tiny Human Skeleton

This Mysterious Winged Tiny Human Skeleton Was Discovered In                  The Basement Of An Old House In London!

Preserved ‘remains’ of fairies, werewolves and other otherworldly creatures were supposedly discovered in an old house owned by mysterious 19th century collector.

The ghastly exhibit was supposedly the collection of a “Thomas Theodore Merrylin” – a supposedly “rich aristocrat and biologist in the 1800s”.
Indeed, his collection features the skeletons of werewolves, vampires, aliens and winged fairies. These artifacts were supposedly discovered in the basement of his old house in London.

This gruesome collection features intricate framed skeletons as well as jars and cases of mythical creatures in gruesome poses.
Remains of fairies with their wings nailed to boards are put on display alongside the remains of strange aliens and human-like creatures.

Plastic Food Models Aren't Just for Restaurants Anymore

In Japan, Plastic Food Models Aren't          Just for Restaurants Anymore

In Japan, plastic models of food are common outside of just about every eatery. In order to provide potential customers with information about exactly what's on the menu, shokuhin sanpuru (食品サンプル, “food samples”), or highly detailed replicas of every dish served in the restaurant, are displayed near the entrance. Customers peruse the food samples, and then decide to enter the shop or keep looking for someplace to eat.
There is an entire industry devoted to creating these food samples. The Tokyo neighborhood of Kappabashi is home to a cluster of these small businesses that make plastic food samples, which German filmmaker Wim Wenders documented in his movie Tokyo-Ga more than 20 years ago.
While plastic food samples are so common in Japan as to be unnoticeable to most Japanese people, there is a new trend in Japan to turn them into eye-catching cellphone accessories and other knick-knacks. Writing on Naver Matome, blogger itinii has collected a variety of social media links with photos of this twist on shokuhin sanpuru.

Now on sale: new smartphone straps based on food samples used at Kichijoji Tokyu department store.
Food samples have been turned into a variety of kitschy collectibles including, in this case, refrigerator magnets:

Designed to look like an apple with a notch cut out for a smaphone, this is a striking design.
This is just the beginning of an increasing descent into whimsy. Some smartphone stand and case designers allow you to create your own work of art, in this case, by using ikura, or salmon roe that is a popular topping served with white rice. One Twitter user doubts:

Is there anyone out there who is going to say, “Wow, cool, I can customize my smartphone case with salmon roe?” I think I'll be the only one.

For a new display at Tokyo Station, here are some shokuhin sample fridge magnets.
The food sample novelty boom is becoming increasingly more elaborate. In this case, a kaisen-don (a popular seafood rice bowl) has been transformed into a smartphone stand.
